The character of Commander Mahlia Belonn was created for the USS Legacy which was the started by the NZ ST Fan Club. She originally joined the ship as a Lt Commander in the position of Communications Officer, but on the very first mission was given a field promotion to Commander and became the First Officer. Mahlia Belonn is a joined Trill who has learned to question some of the customs of her planet of birth.

For those people who do not know what a Trill is, the Star Trek Encyclopedia states that a Trill is "a joined species comprised of a humanoid host and a small vermiform symbiont that resides in an internal abdominal pocket of the host body. Most of the personality and memories of the Trill reside in the symbionts, which are extremely long-lived, although the host also contributes personality traits to the joined life-form. Upon the death of the host body, a Trill symbiont can be transplanted into another host. Trill hosts enter voluntarily into their association with the symbiont, and in fact there is rigorous competition among potential hosts to determine who will be accorded this honor. Hosts are accepted into their mid twenties. Once joined, the host and the symbiont become biologically interdependent, and after 93 hours, neither can survive without the other. The resulting new joined life-form is considered to be another person, although it retains memories of previous joinings." What the encyclopedia doesn't point out is that some Trill hosts have dark spots all the way from their heads to their ankles, while others have no spots and bumpy foreheads. Mahlia is one of the former (like Jadzia and Ezri Dax from DS9).

When I am not working, I love to spend time on my computer. I am on a lot of mailing lists, and receive many emails a day. I also love to watch TV and Movies. I have been steadily building up my Video and DVD collection and it is a very eclectic collection - everything from Disney to Martial Arts and everything in between. My special love is for 70's and 80's TV shows, especially Emergency!, The Professionals, Starsky and Hutch, Battlestar Galactica, and the A-Team. I am very much a Trekkie, and have gone as far as having tattoos done on my back and arms. It is a work in progress, but I am very pleased with how they have turned out so far.
